Empathy, Exhaustion, and Social Change
In a world that is entrenched in systems of oppression, the 24-hour news cycle, and social media, pain, suffering, and loss are always on display in one way or another. The path to justice is a seemingly never ending swim upstream. Some feel the need to “choose their battles” in order to avoid burnout. This conversation will consider questions such as: Is the ability to choose battles a position of privilege? Is recognizing exhaustion amongst some communities justified but not among others? How does this relate to experiences of “compassion fatigue,” “activist fatigue,” and “allyship fatigue”? From the conversation should emerge strategies to respond to these lived experiences.
